Need to Know: 3 Dates This Month (January 2017)

#1. Stephen Hawking’s Birthday

Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking was born on January 8th, 1942 and turns 75 this month. Hawking is famous for his work in physics and in the mainstream is famous for his book A Brief History of Time and others.

Here is a quote from an interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC News in 2010 via Mental Floss:

[Advice he gave to his children]

One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.

#2. The Outer Space Treaty

On January 27, 1967 The Outer Space Treaty opened for signatures and was signed by the U.S., U.K., and the Soviet Union. Under The Outer Space Treaty, all space exploration is to be conducted in the interest of mankind with mutual assistance and cooperation; weapons are not allowed to be sent into orbit, nor are they allowed to be stationed on any celestial bodies; military bases on celestial bodies are forbidden; and outer space belongs to all of mankind. One-hundred two countries have signed the treaty.

#3. Gulf War Oil Spill

The Gulf War Oil Spill occurred on January 19, 1991 in an apparent attempt to prevent U.S. forces from landing in the region. In 2010 Live Science called the Gulf War Oil Spill one of the worst in history; approximately 8 million barrels spilled into the Persian Gulf.

Cnn reported that Iraqi troops leaving Kuwait set fire to oil wells and released oil into the Persian Gulf on purpose. It is considered to be one of worst, if not the worst, oil spill in history.
